Best Learning Center Practices to Support Online
Student Success and Retention

Learning assistance personnel face a challenge as
campus students enroll in online courses. Online
students need specific learning and study
strategies support for online course success.
Online Instructors need a learning assistance
perspective to consider how to support student
learning. This presentation looks at some
promising learning center practices that can be
implemented or strengthened 1) to involve learning
center administration and staff in helping campus
students enrolled in online courses, and 2) to
assist course developers and instructors to
consider integrating learning assistance support
into their online courses.

Objectives:
1) How learning center administration and staff
can provide campus students with online course
learning and study strategies for academic success.

2) How learning center administration and staff
can provide campus course designers and
instructors with ways to increase online student
retention and success.

3) How learning center administration and staff
can impact on district and state distance
education to consider partnering with them for
online student retention and success.

Learning Center administration and staff, online
course designers and instructors, distance
education administrative personnel.

Who is the speaker?
Frank Christ is the founder and co-director of the
Winter Institutes for Learning Assistance
Professionals and has been actively involved with
learning assistance and learning centers for the
past 40 years. He was the founder and past
coordinator (1972-1990) of the award-winning
Learning Assistance Support System at CSU Long
Beach. Frank is also a founder and past president
of the Western College Reading Association, now
known as the College Reading and Learning
Association and a member of NCLCA.
